You should test if your dog is a Miniature Wire Dachshund, Beagle or Basset Hound and:
Your dog –
- Is age 4+ and showing 1 or more of the symptoms listed.
- Has UK bloodlines and you intend to breed from your dog
- Is younger but siblings have tested Affected or Carrier. If your dog is Affected, early dietary changes may reduce the impact
Note for Mini Wirehaired Dachshund Owners outside the UK:
We know only 10% of UK Mini Wires are affected, 35% are carriers, because of the WHDC’s Testing Programme.
UK bred dogs have been exported to other countries, including some known Carriers, so it is highly likely that the condition has already been introduced internationally. Without a similar testing in bulk, it is impossible to be certain that Lafora does not exist elsewhere, either because of the imports or naturally.
Note for Other Breeds:
Lafora is known to affect other breeds, but there is no record of how often it occurs. Symptoms described may be the result of other conditions, including other forms of epilepsy.
